How a Bilingual Producer Built a Global Voiceover Career

For Hedras Ramos—better known in the industry as Rod Gonzalez—the path to voiceover was anything but typical. He began as a guitarist, moved into record production, and became a sought-after jingle producer.

But the turning point came one day when a scheduled voice actor didn’t show up for his session at Gonzalez’s studio. With no replacement available, the creative producer urged him to step in.

“So I tried and it worked,” Gonzalez recalled. More than two decades later, he’s still at the mic.

Finding opportunity in every shift

Gonzalez’s early years in audio production meant long hours crafting radio and TV commercials and directing top voice actors. Watching their efficiency left an impression. 

“Actors would come to my studio and in a matter of a few minutes the job was done,” he remembered. “And they were making four digits at a faster rate than I was, while I was putting together a whole radio or TV commercial for the top advertising agency that hired me. It was a more time-consuming job.”

After moving to the U.S., Gonzalez faced new challenges and found new opportunities for change. The jingle industry had cooled, but the voiceover world opened its doors wide. He rediscovered the same spark that first drew him to music. 

“Now I get the same satisfaction of hearing my voice on radio or TV commercials as I did when creating music,” he said. “It’s a cool feeling!”

Mandy as a launchpad

Now based in Dallas, Gonzalez relies on Mandy as a cornerstone of his voice career. 

“I’ve been subscribed for several years and apply every time I see a good fit,” he said. “Quick response can have an effect in getting the role.” He prioritizes responding to casting calls as soon as possible so he is among the very first auditions a producer or creative director hears. 

That approach has landed him projects like the Kansas Lottery’s "Tiger and Dragon" campaign, among others.

Building connections, building trust

Beyond his own bookings, Gonzalez has grown into a trusted voiceover producer for clients needing multiple voices in English and Spanish. “I’ve built a solid network where I hire or represent other voiceover talent,” he said, describing how he connects clients with male, female, and child voices in both languages. Many of those clients have worked with him for years.

His professional philosophy has guided him through every change. “Deliver the very best of you. Be persistent, consistent, reliable,” he said. “Learn new skills that connect with what you currently do.”

Growing through every stage

For Gonzalez, adaptation isn’t just a survival skill, it’s the reason his career continues to thrive. 

“This is a changing world and we need to adapt,” he said. “I have gone through several stages in my life” and each one has pushed him to grow. 

He credits his longevity to a simple outlook. “Love what you do so it does not become a job but a pleasure.”
