About me
I've come into acting late in life and bring to the profession a wealth of experience gained in many fields that I can bring to my craft.I am a great believer in professionalism and completely understand that acting is a TEAM game, because what I do impacts on not only the rest of the cast, but also all the technical staff backstage and behind the camera.
Acting experience:
For many years prior to becoming a professional actor I appeared in a specialist form or acting themed around morality plays. The roles I played required me to memorise very long speeches and monologues (700 - 1200+ words long) which have be be word, emphasis and action perfect and have proved to be a great training method for learning acting scripts.
Additional skills:
IT Skills: I worked in computing at the start of the Windows revolution and I am a systems analyst.
Teacher: I taught ICT in the UK State Secondary school system for 6 years - 4 of which were in Special Educational Needs Education, working mainly with students with autism.
Youth Work: I was a volunteer youth worker for 35 years, working with young people aged between 6 and 20 years of age. In that role, I had extensive training in all aspects of youth work.
Outdoors Skills: I was in the Reserve Army in my 20's and spent 30 years as a leader in outdoor based youth work.
I am a survival instructor. I have held instructor qualifications in Archery, Air Rifle Shooting. I can abseil, read a map, pitch a tent, light a fire, forage for food and find my way without a compass and map - and much more besides.
I am also a qualified physical and mental health first aider.
I know how to pick locks - properly, rather than how it's portrayed on screen - though I am a little rusty these days.
I hold an amateur radio licence.
I hold a driving licence and can drive vans and 7.5 tonne trucks as well as tractors and vehicles with trailers.
I am published writer who has had technical and teaching material published in a variety of publications and journals.
I have also written two short novels (soon to be published) and have created comedy sketches for myself and others to perform.
I am a very experience photographer whose work has been published in national and local newspapers as well as on the CNN news site - hence the reason most of the photos on this profile have been taken by me.
I am vegetarian/vegan
Additional information:
I come from a very ordinary west London background and spent the first 20 years of my working life working as a tradesman.
I was educated at Oxford and the LSE as a mature student and the academic abilities gained from that classical education enables me to do the kind of deep research required to create an authentic character, so much so that when I played a Church of England Rector in a murder mystery play, my questioning of an ACTUAL Rector about his work during my research left him convinced I had 'seen the light' and wanted to ordain!
This research helped me stay in character whilst mingling with the audience for over two hours after the play and enabled me to fend off all manner of questions, including one from an audience member asking how HE could become a vicar.
My work career has been extremely varied. I started out as a shoe repairer and ending up working in an creative college, by way of working as a teacher, an IT systems analyst and a freelancer who has worked in 60 different kinds of organisations ranging from merchant banking and management consultancy to construction and charity fundraising.
These experiences can be brought to my roles in other ways too.
For example, on one acting course, I played Jacob in Ghosts, a character who has a leg injury requiring him to wear crudely adapted shoes. Adapting such shoes was my specialty, so I was able to create an authentic shoe for the character based on the type of injury specified in the text.
Outside of work, I have a wealth of experience in voluntary work. I have volunteered in youth groups, churches, homeless charities, campaigning groups, political organisations, helplines and theatres.
What this voluntary work has done is bring me into contact with people and experiences that again, feed into my acting. Since starting acting, there has hardly been a time when I have not been able to look at a character I am playing and find myself able to draw on the many different people I have encountered in life.
